I don't think it's possible to dislike the Cashew Chemists, they are so affable that it'd be like saying you dislike baby animals or a cool drink on a hot day. This might explain their music, which Baybeats judge Daniel Sassoon describes as "...what The Strokes might have sounded like if they traded their New York hipster club-prowling swagger for a Singapore kopitiam seat-hunting gait."
I could not agree more. Their songs have an effortlessly youthful exuberance, waxing lyrical about romance and all the sticky sentiments that follow. One also spots a hint of old school rock and roll in the arrangements by guitarist Brian, bassist Elliot and drummer Zachary, delightfully brought to its full effect by Yuji Kumagai's vocals, which according to my mum, " dreamily hits all the right notes, with the timbre of an old fashioned crooner."
Young, talented and auntie killers? These boys are designed to go far.
I had a comfortable chat with them at Brian's home at Cashew Road, which also happens to be where the band derived its name. Check out the videos below, better yet let your mums watch it, see if they'd rave about them for a full 5 minutes like mine did. -_-
